Today was pre-registration day for incoming kindergarten students at the school that my daughter will attend in the fall. It was a bit of a crazy experience for us. Why? Only because I had to bring my 2 year old along. We got there around 9:15am and trying to park was an event all in itself. It took us over 15 minutes to park because the car drop off line was going at the same time. Crazy!
After that we waited in line for over an hour. By the time we got inside the media center my son was all fired up and ready to cause mischief. Imagine filling out all the required paperwork with my son running around the media center. Ahhh! Thankfully, everyone was very helpful and supportive. Most parents were very understanding but some did offer unpleasant "looks" our way.
It was a very long process to get all the paperwork done. Lots of lines to deal with. The media center was also cramped because it was packed with lots of parents and kids. It just was not a 'toddler friendly' environment. Of course I already knew that and did not want to bring my son with me but I did not have a choice. Obviously I do not have many options once it comes to getting a babysitter. We have no family in town and on a day like today I really wish we did.
How did I handle all the madness? I paced myself. I did some deep breathing exercises and tried to stay calm. One thing I knew and that was that I did not want another headache so I put all my effort into staying positive and calm. It worked! We got through the morning and although it was somewhat chaotic, we did it and that is what is important. I'm glad it is over.
I did meet some teachers that I knew from the school I did my teaching internship at (over 4 years ago). They were transferred to this school about 3 years ago when it was just built. It was nice to catch up a bit with them. We also met someone who lives in our neighborhood and her son will be attending kindergarten too. Maybe my daughter will be in his class. I'm looking forward to my daughter's kindergarten experience at this school. I've heard many good things about the school and I'm happy she'll be attending school there.
